Nigel Tomkins - RIP

All in ACU Western and many beyond are mourning the sad loss of a true great of the centre.

Stroud Valley MC member Nigel 'Wizz' Tomkins was a very capable rider, he fettled some superb machinery, and he rolled up his sleeves to get involved in organising with the minimum of fuss and a very dry quip or two.

Nigel passed away after an illness which he bore with quiet bravery, and continued riding last year until his health prevented it.

He was ACU Western Trials Intermediate Champion twice in his 50s, Novice Champion once, and won his last 3 events in the 2018 and 2019 ACU Western Trials Championships in the Over 50 class despite being way older than most if not all of the other riders.

He was a familiar and welcome sight around BVM Moto, offering expert advice on machine set-up, and helping out at the shop in various ways.

His machines were immaculately-turned out but very much for "go" rather than just "show". During lockdown he married a 2012 Beta Evo Factory frame with a 2019 bike because it offered improved performance, and his TY and Bantam were as good as the best in their respective classes. His immaculate approach did not end there - his riding style was similar. He carefully plotted his way through sections with great skill and guile, always "riding the line" without needed to hop or bounce. He would readily share advice, but never took himself too seriously either.

He thoroughly enjoyed his Scotland trips for the Pre-65 Two Day and SSDT in the company of great friends from SVMC and ACU Western too. He was a trials man through and through. He will be deeply missed.

His passing was marked at the January 10 ACU Western Board Meeting, and our condolences are extended to his family at this very sad time.

Anyone who would like to add their tributes to Nigel can do so by emailing me or via the ACU Western Facebook page.
