CHG Hazleton CtC Trial 2 Jan 2006

report by Ben Falconer (Full results now available from CHG's own website.)

A NEAT ride by John Hawthorne saw him pip Martyn Wilmore by two marks at Robin's Quarry.

Some 109 riders turned up for the closed to club event, many attracted by an alternative route which was not too challenging.

But the standard route was marked tightly and it was at the tightest section of all where Hawthorne won the trial.

Just two dabs on section seven proved twice as good as Wilmore's efforts of a three and a one, both riders recording two cleans as well.

That section gave most of the entry considerable grief, although as with most sections over the Cotswold stone, a grippy line emerged on lap three.

Best over 40 Adrian Steele also mastered section seven twice but errors elsewhere cost him a total of 10 marks, which was still a very creditable ride on a day when others' scores reached treble figures.

Around two thirds of the field enjoyed a relatively easy alternative route but that trail winner Cameron Thompson was the only rider to go clean underlined the need for total concentration over the unsteady rocks. He headed up an impressive list of more mature "names" including Pat Barrett, Ken Garfield and Bob Gollner, who proved their pedigree once again by getting in to the awards.

Thanks to the observers and landowner for their support.
